Candles have had a bit of a moment over the past few years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What was once a fairly niche purchase has become a genuine staple in most homes, and with that has come a lot more scrutiny about what’s actually in them. If you’ve started noticing \u2018soy wax\u2019 written on labels and wondered whether it actually makes a difference for the environment<\/a>, this blog has some much-needed answers for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This blog explains what sets soy candles apart<\/a> from conventional paraffin ones and why it matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Are Most Candles Made From?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The majority of candles on the market, including many well-known and expensive ones, are made from paraffin wax. Paraffin is a by-product of petroleum refining, which means it comes directly from crude oil. When it burns, it releases a range of compounds into the air, including toluene and benzene, both of which are known carcinogens. It also produces soot, which is the black residue you sometimes see collecting around the rim of a candle jar or on the wall above it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

None of this means that burning a paraffin candle occasionally is going to cause you serious harm, but if you’re burning candles regularly in an enclosed space, the air quality implications are worth thinking about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where Does Soy Wax Come From?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Soy wax is made from hydrogenated soybean oil, which makes it a natural, plant-based and renewable resource. Soybeans are grown and harvested, which means the raw material can be replenished rather than extracted from a finite fossil fuel source.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From an environmental standpoint, this is a meaningful difference. Soy wax is biodegradable, it produces significantly less soot than paraffin, and the carbon it releases when burned is part of a natural cycle rather than carbon that has been locked underground for millions of years being released into the atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s worth acknowledging that soy farming does have its own environmental considerations, particularly around land use and agricultural practices. Choosing candles made with certified or responsibly sourced soy wax is worth looking out for if this matters to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Soy Candles Burn Differently<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the environmental side of things, soy wax simply performs better as a candle material in several practical ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It burns cooler and more slowly than paraffin, which means a soy candle will typically last noticeably longer<\/a> than a paraffin one of the same size. The difference can be significant, often 30 to 50 per cent more burn time, which makes soy candles better value over time despite sometimes being priced slightly higher upfront.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soy wax also has a lower melting point, which means it holds fragrance differently. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many chandlers and fragrance makers prefer working with soy wax because it tends to give a cleaner, more even scent throw. The fragrance is released gradually as the wax melts rather than all at once, which gives a more consistent and pleasing result throughout the life of the candle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Air Quality Difference in Soy Candles<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is the point that tends to matter most to people once they know about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paraffin candles produce petro-carbon soot when they burn. If you’ve ever wiped a black smudge off a wall near where you regularly burn candles, that’s what you’re dealing with. It’s the same type of particulate matter produced by diesel engines, and while a candle is obviously producing far less of it, the indoor air quality implications are real, particularly for people with asthma or respiratory sensitivities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Soy candles produce minimal soot by comparison. They’re not completely soot-free<\/a> (no candle is) and a poorly trimmed wick will produce soot regardless of the wax, but the difference in particulate output between a well-made soy candle and a paraffin one is substantial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keeping your wick trimmed to about 5mm before each burn makes a big difference to how cleanly any candle burns, soy or otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What to Look for When Buying Soy Wax Candles<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Not every candle labelled as natural or clean is made purely from soy wax. Some contain soy blended with paraffin, which reduces cost but also reduces the benefits. It’s worth checking whether a candle is 100% soy wax, or at least understanding what the blend is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other things worth checking include whether the fragrance oils used are skin-safe and free from harmful chemicals, whether the wick is cotton or wood rather than metal-cored and whether the brand is transparent about its ingredients. A candle company that’s confident in what it puts into its products will generally tell you without you having to ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s worth noting that the candle market has expanded enormously and the quality and ethics of what’s available varies hugely. Soy wax isn’t a magic solution to every concern, but it is a genuinely better choice than paraffin on most counts that matter \u2013 for the air in your home, longevity, fragrance quality<\/a> and for the environment.
