5 Myths About Soy Candles.

By Faye Lord

Soy candles are often marketed as cleaner, safer and more sustainable than traditional paraffin wax. While there’s some truth to that, not everything you hear holds up. This article clears up the most common myths, so you can make informed choices about what you’re burning at home.

Why Soy Wax Is Seen as a Better Option

Soy wax is made from soybeans – a renewable, plant-based material that’s biodegradable and burns slower than paraffin. That’s why it’s popular with people looking for a more environmentally responsible or lower-toxic option.

But a soy candle is only as ‘clean’ or ‘eco-friendly’ as its ingredients, how it’s made and how it’s used. That’s where misinformation creeps in.

Common Myths About Soy Candles

Let’s take a closer look at five claims that often get repeated and the facts behind them.

1. Soy Candles Are Soot-Free

They’re not. No candle is.

Soy wax does produce less soot than paraffin, but it can still release some smoke, especially if the wick is too long or the flame flickers. To reduce soot, trim the wick before each burn and avoid draughty spots. Learn how to make your vegan candles last longer on our blog.

2. Soy Candles Have a Weak Scent

This isn’t about the wax — it’s about the formula.

Scent throw (how well a candle fills a space) depends on the quality and amount of fragrance oil used, the wick and the container. A well-made soy candle can perform just as well as paraffin, sometimes better, thanks to its slower burn.

3. All Soy Candles Are Non-Toxic

Not automatically.

Some soy candles are blended with paraffin or use synthetic fragrances that may contain allergens or irritants. If you’re looking for a genuinely low-tox option, check that it’s 100% soy wax, with phthalate-free fragrance oils and cotton or wood wicks.

4. Soy Wax Is Safer Because It Burns Cooler

True – but only to a point.

Soy wax melts at a lower temperature than paraffin, so the candle lasts longer and burns more evenly. But it still involves an open flame. Cooler doesn’t mean safe to touch or risk-free. Standard candle safety still applies.

5. Soy Candles Are Always Eco-Friendly

Not necessarily.

While soy is plant-based, that doesn’t guarantee sustainability. Large-scale soybean farming can involve pesticides, deforestation and GM crops. If environmental impact matters to you, look for non-GMO soy, local production and responsible sourcing.

The Truth Matters More Than the Label

Soy candles can be a better option — but not all of them are. The wax type is just one part of the picture. What really matters is transparency: the ingredients, the sourcing and how the candle is made. Read the label. Ask questions. Choose ethical brands like Eden Perfumes that give clear answers.
